What are Permalinks?

THIS COULD BE USEFUL:

Permalinks are the permanent URLs to your individual weblog posts, as well as categories and other lists of weblog postings. A permalink is what another weblogger will use to link to your article (or section), or how you might send a link to your story in an e-mail message. The URL to each post should be permanent, and never change — hence permalink.

THIS – URL: askapache has some sage advice in – ‘Please Backup your entire MySql Database before you ever mess with Permalinks or rewrites.’

I can hear a little voice saying ‘I dont know how to backup MySql Database’, .. Backup wordpress-blog (ver 2.8.4) using the, .. Tools | Export | Backup – Download all the text of your blog into a *.xml file format. Your images, and multimedia will have to be backed up manually. The *.xml format preserves the complete structure of you blog.

There might be a complete solution out there, that will backup EVERY-THING in your blog, (Please place a link here) if you know of a better solution. Thx

A brief comment here just to place something / anything until I have something worthwhile to say. Just experimenting with WordPress, and need a post HERE. Testing if this category thing works like I expect it to.

ALSO; I would be good to have a link to the ‘Start-Page’ http://grd.net.au here. OK, now this link is NOT automatically created, I will have to explore that a little further.

ADDING: (To ALL posts, as a way to get BACK to the start)

It is OK, But for my liking, I NEED to be able to do this Quickly.
AND; Being new to wordpress, the quickly thing is NOT happening.
The ‘Home’ link is a bit clunky, when there are other-links generated by word press, but when I click on the TAG-Links, there is NO-way to get back to the ‘Beggining’. (It is important to me to understand how wordpress behaves,  and have access to the start-page while testing/developing)
