restrictions in effect

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

UNinstalled Chrome – (The eventvwr.exe hinted at shutdown slow-downs due to chrome)

GOOGLEDrestrictions in effect on this computer outlook

The link, describes (Most closely what has happend, Ie, remove the “Chome” web browser) – AND; removed some other Lenovo software, AND; – (Was messing about with gpedit.msc) … NOW have a problem with “Links in Outlook” generating the following error.

This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.

a problem

Removed Chrome -and- Outlook now says this!

Unable to REVERSE the sequence of operations, .. -AND- Tried “System-Restore” – (Using the Adminstrator acccount) – which failed on TWO occasions. -Vista-Biz, is very, … (How should I put this)- non-functional, possibly due to ME trying make it perform (a little better) -

This operating system simply gets in the way of “normal” computer activities.

A SOLUTION -???- (website slipstick.com seem to have a nice simple / quick explaination and how to fix solution) here on this link >>> http://www.slipstick.com/problems/link_restrict.htm <<< so will give these options a try. BEFORE trying some of the Micro$oft options, .. which are hinting at “importing a registry hive” from another machine, .. (That sound like fun!)

Error = “Vista”

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

POST-TITLE; – “The Error is Vista” – (Should never have bought a machine with this OS, .. dont like upgrades and buying the full Windows 7 at around $300 (+ or – $50) is un-acceptable, ..

OTHER M$ bugs = Office 2007 (And the new “Ribbon-Feature?”) – lets put it this way, … IF I have to spend time (Hours?) learning a new office tool-set, namely the “Ribbon” which microsoft in their wisdom have persisted in placing “like-feature(s)” in separate areas???, … I would rather put the hours into learning Open-Office 3.2, and see what alternative software(s) have to offer, as Vista -/- Office 2007, … required me to invest heavily in MORE “re-skilling”.

THE TRAINING; – Is the most expensive part of owning a computer system, and the “Micro$oft-Vista-way”, .. simply does NOT work (consistently), … combined with Lenovo crap-ware, the problem is multiplied. Now , …

A DECISION;
– Re-devlelop, the old skills sets (formatting documents) with open office. Prepare to use alternative OS. Easy to say, … hard to do.

IF new (To this blog) and my situation -/- “The on-going problem” ~ follow >>> [Tag-Links: "App crash", "eventvwr.exe", "Firefox hangs", "Vista", "Web-Browsers"] <<< at the bottom of this post.

BROWSER? – CHROME; – The Google web-browser hangs!

CHECKING THE EVENTvwr.exe – (Which tells me lots of technical stuff – the solution might be in the interpretation, but I have lost patience (And time will no longer allow me to pursue troubleshooting in this manner))

FILE-NAME; – 2 user registry handles leaked (BECOMEs – “Chrome_2UserRegistryHandlesLeaked.txt”)

LOGGED; – 8/06/2010 12:01:42 PM

THE PROBLEM:
This browser has “Hung” a number times today – (AND; strangely started working again without REBOOTING the system)

I have rebooted the system on ONE occasion, as I needed “A fully-Functional-system” – (Some admin-chore)

ERROR = “Vista”

Which of these services (that I have DISABLED, might be responsible for this behaviour?)

I am very patient (AND; curious) about system errors and trouble shooting / fixing / finding a SOLUTION.

HOWEVER; – (As documented PREVIOUSLY) – This sort of thing is just beyond my limit and current resource to pursue, (Which in turn means I am NOT doing the stuff that I should be doing) – GRRRRRR -

BELOW; – (Is one of the error messages in eventvwr.exe – The “Custom Views | Administrative Events”)

Windows detected your registry file is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded now. The applications or services that hold your registry file may not function properly afterwards.

DETAIL -

Sticky notification;- any body looking for “Category-Topic – Vista-Biz” – See the “Mini-Blog” in the lower right-hand side of the blog with headers in orange text. – Tags: App crash, eventvwr.exe, Firefox hangs, Vista, Web-Browsers -

The Mini-Blog, sidebar used to have category-topic “Web-Development-cat=34″

UPDATED; – Thursday 17 June – (Removed Sticky Notification)

Uninstalled Acrobat Reader 9.2.x

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Yesterdays dummy-spit had me using BT4 – However, making a “permanent-move” to a Linux-based Distro (Right-Now) is not really an option, as I have a lot of stuff to get through, … and I do NOT want to be spending TIME, researching software/tools/utilities etc.

SO; – today, … after getting the usual app-crash -/- browser-HANG, … I have UN-Installed Acrobat-Reader 9.2.x -AND- without having to reboot, … the Internet connectivity was miraculously restored, .. (LIKE immaculate conception) – it just started working.

THIS-TIME; – I will simply continue using the laptop, without ANY adobe-reader software.

TAG – Firefox Hangs - (I have changed the “Mini-Blog” sidebar) – To Vista-Biz

UPDATED -  Tuesday 13 July 2010 – The MiniBlog sidebar (plugin) has been removed (But I might put it back on-day)

BT4

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

I have spat the dummy with Vista -/- Lenovo -/- Crapware -/- Adobe-Reader -/- BROWSER – App-Crash-HANG, .. (What-ever the problem – it is NOT fixed – and persists – GRRRRRR -

Writing this from BT4 – (Back-Track Ver4) – (USB-Key installation of Linux Distro)
THIS-POST; – Is going to look VERY rough! – (Some browser feature like Java is missing -AND- Adobe plugins still required for the “Out of the Box” install of BT4)

Booted into BT4 – (Command-Line?) omg – ok – “startx” – (Starts the GUI)
AFTER; – getting into the graphical interface – (Connect to the Internet?) -

Services | Network | Start Network – (They really have made this easy for the new-comer) – Via Firefox Ver 3.0.15

Had to figure out HOW to mount, (any drive) – LIKE – The laptop HDD -OR- external HDD with backup files.

mkdir /mnt/usb2
mount /dev/sda2  /mnt/usb2
Which has given me access Via the Konqueror-Browser

UPDATED – Sunday 20 June 2010 – Found the Ubuntu-Mount/USB instructions HERE >>> https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Mount/USB <<<

MORE >>> About mounting file-systems and Harddisks – Search “Tech Anvil” on YouTube, … (This guy provides a NICE short demo / tutorial using ANY linux-distro to mount-stuff, … { Embed-video below } – HERE it is >>>

Damn – All sorts of stuff is NOT working – so the instructions above can NOT be completed right now, … So here is the url to visit on YouTube – >>> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqhEpvhZ4ck = Tech Anvil <<< – That will be interesting to see exactly WHAT is requried to make “normallity-return” using firefox on BT4

5:55pm – All sorted – The BT4-Team have a Firefox-Addon called NoScript.net – built into the browser – as installed out of to the box, which blocks-scripts.

Had to reset the password on the blog.

Text-Editor-Kate; – (Very nice editor) – I could get used to this!

XXXX – X = OBSERVATION – WordPress-Interface is displaying the pTAG for (paragraph) – XXXX – Checking the blockquote tags work? – Answer = YES – which provides SOME control of the formatting

SAVED-DRAFT – (just messed up the NICE formatting that WAS displayed BEFORE the save)

AFTER a forced interruption like THIS, it is difficult to resume WHERE I left off, I dont even feel like reading it now, … I am going for a walk!

BELOW: – The sequence of text “Vista-Related” -AND- saved into notepad, … that FORCED the “Change of OS to BT4″ – considering it is now 4pm – I am happy to get THIS far, and be able to complete this post :) -

WTF – Now() 2:15pm Thursday 27 May 2010 – Three browsers NOT connecting to the Internet!

SITES; – Attempted to open, BUT – The “App-Crash-/-Hang”-PROBLEM still exists.

SENARIO: -
Have made Chrome the DEFAULT-Browser, … AND – there is 15-Tabbed Pages open

AND; – Outlook 2007, Word-2007, Windows-Explorer, 3-Notepad-Files, …

AND; – Outlook can still send and receive “Test-Emails” -/- Just the browser(s) can NOT connect.
Tried, IE8, Firefox-3.6.3, Chrome being the default browser.

PREVIOUSLY – IF Firefox was to HANG, … I was able to open the alternative browser, and continue, … WITHOUT having to REBOOT.

NOW() – The three-browser (listed above) display NOTHING.

The Lenovo-Vista-Crapware-Abobe-COMBINATION, seems to Fail for me, and the Event-Viewer, (eventvwr.exe), … WHAT does it tell me?

PAGES NOT VISITED; – (Might revisit soon) – { Section Links ~ CUT / Deleted }
Might have to FORCE myself to start using the USB-Linux – (Knoppix 6.3) – As to date the problem continues to exist, making ME, post into notepad, … what you see above! GRRRRR – 2:20pm Thursday 27 May 2010 -

It really disrupts ANY “Workflow” that MIGHT have existed! – Rebooted, back into Knoppix, … That will teach it! – But I want to post-THIS into my GRD/blog, … once I boot into knoppix, … BACKUP – AND – Not the localREF-PATHinfo – *uc* – So I have Two copies – (Gotta be able to access one of them from Knoppix)
xxxxx\C:\Users\grdanson\Documents\2010\ERRORs\AcroRd32_exe\ { 3_NoBrowsersConnect.txt }

TIME – 2:25pm – Backup to external HDD! – Starts NOW()

I will have to FIND the Knoppix usb (asap) – but for now BT4 will suffice! – FINISHED 4:15pm Thursday 27 May – AND – There are four comments to respond to – I have approved those, but will get back to the “reponding-bit” tonight, .. Thanks for the comments -

DROID Running Android 2.1 Update 1

QUOTE ~ YOU-TUBER; – motodroidlife — March 01, 2010 — http://www.droid-life.com – We flashed our phone with the Android 2.1 update 1 last night which is essentially the OTA update everyone is expecting for their Motorola DROID. This is not a custom or ported version of 2.1.

Part of keeping up to date – (Nice catchy phrase, from Australia Post Ad)

That phrase summaries what, how, and why, .. I post stuff here on my blog. There are a lot more rationalizations going through my head, but that is enough for now.

SEGWAYs – (into a number of other disjointed stuff that I want included somewhere, in this ONE post, / old-draft, DELETE -OR- POST? – here it is!)

Hoping the “App-Crash” problem (Related to Memory-Leaks? NO) – is GONE for good, and now (the day after UN-Installing Acrobat-Reader Ver8) that has been done, maybe I can ad stuff to this draft, (Forgotten what I was going to say, as this was started weeks ago) -STARTING NOW() – Monday 17 May 2010 – (Another NEW-START?) -[UPDATED - NOW() Tuesday 24 May - ReInstalled Acrobat-Reader Ver9.2, -AND- given permission for some "Adobe-update" to complete, .... ... what else can I say, ... The Browser is working as of right now, ... Ill click update, so I dont have to save this text-string into notepad]

AND; How do I work blippy.com into this post? – (I DONT) – I am going back to find another old draft started previously, … “Theme-Idea” = Advertising, and am I influenced?
http://blippy.com/ – Reference RN – Backgound Briefing; STORY = “The privacy paradox”

QUOTE; – Stephen Colbert: Thankfully folks, just like us celebrities now ordinary people can publicise their lives in minute detail, thanks to social networking sites like MySpace, Facebook and Twitter. Unfortunately, sometimes I have to interrupt my Tweeting, Sexting, and Inbetwexting to buy or eat things, but now there’s a way to do it all. And it’s all thanks to Blippy.com, a revolutionary new site which lets you register your credit card online, then every purchase you make is automatically posted on Blippy. Wow! This is more exciting than going through old receipts. It’s going through new receipts!

DELETED; – Draft-Permalink – “http://grd.net.au/blog/?p=2730″
QUESTION; – What happens with the php-number?p=2730, AFTER deleting the draft attached to that number?
(I dont intend to anwser that question, … I just like asking?

Thats the sort of thing that goes through my mind) – Draft?p=2730 was deleted – { Some oblek reference to iRobot-scene, “YOU, are having an accident” }

I know what I mean, … just nobody else can follow, … (me)

In relation to the Android 2.1 - There is an interesting article from Jason Hiner of TechRepublic detailing some recent (Last couple of years) -/- MAJOR changes in smart-phone abilities – LINK – >>> The rise of the computer phone <<<

Is Android destined to be the Windows of mobile computing?
With the spread of Android accelerating, the assumption that Android will become the dominant mobile platform is also gaining stream. But, how likely is it?

Operational status (Services disabled)

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

THIS-POST; – (Related to App crash? – I think so)
So that people are NOT being MIS-Informed, about the true circumstance of this “Computer-Status”, .. (r61 IBM Laptop) ~ (Running -Vista-Biz, with a GAZillion-IBM addons, and combined with the EXTRA Vista-SERVICES, the machine is / “WAS” slugish.

I have documented the OS-Services that have been disabled over the first 2 to 3 weeks of operation since Re-Installing this OS, here >>> Vista-Biz-Configuration / List of Services DISABLED <<<

IT is useable, and I can get my work done, with the current “Setup”, …
My configuration – Is certainly NOT “As it came” – (Out of the box) from the IBM shop.

AND; IF, I re-install the Vista-Biz DEFAULTs, .. I get the “AWFUL” original-configuration back.

SO; I need to know, what I did, .. to get it into a reasonable “operational-state”.

THIS; Becomes “Part of the Web-Browser series of posted here” and related to “App crash” – (Also in the Web-Browser category)

UDATED – July 13, Vista-Biz (Removed for now) – using Windows 7 Enterprise (Trial-Ver) – Most issuse(s) and problems attached to the Vista-Biz senario, … are gone.

Faulting Application Identified

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

Faulting Application Identified – (Via Event Viewer) – Causes the Chrome web-browser to crash (As-well as the firefox browser), .. Now I have an alternative to continue with, .. (the FF-browser)

The app-crash prevents me from Killing the Brower-Process running, .. (Only a RESTART of the computer, .. can fix that)

THE PROBLEM: – That exists on this computer, (Will cause ANY web-browser to crash, ..  it would seem), .. HENCE the problem is not IN the browser, but some other plugin-/-application, that is hooked into the browser (What ever brower is used)

Windows is know as a “Event-Driven operating system“, .. (THIS Event, taken from eventvwr.exe)

Event Name: AppHangXProcB1
Problem signature:
P1: chrome.exe
P2: 0.0.0.0
P3: 4bd40a55
P4: 4966
P5: 32
P6: AcroRd32.exe
P7: 8.0.0.456

THIS; is (See previous post) >>> Adobe Flash (causing problems?) <<<

UNINSTALL Acrobat Reader Ver 8 – (To be completed tonight, ..)

THEN – Wait and observe, … >>> IF the application-crash, “Disappears” – NEVER to happen again hopefully <<< (Even if it is only once -OR- twice a day, .. it is a real PAIN)

Adobe Flash (causing problems?)

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

Just a link to something possibly related to “Browser-Issues” >>> http://www.zdnet.com/blog/bott/sorry-adobe-flash-is-the-new-vista/2139?tag=nl.e539 <<<

HERE; – Is my problem, .. (There is NO,  error messages VISIBLY generated), .. and so going into the Event-Viewer, .. is the last thing in my current mode of operation, and is simply not done, … yet! – Well, it has been done, …  just not enough to find a resolution to the problem.

Opening Event Viewer from the command line

You can launch Event Viewer from the command-line using eventvwr.exe or mmc.exe. Either command opens Event Viewer.

eventvwr.exe – in the Vista-SEARCH box – opens the “Event Viewer” – (AFTER adding it to the “snapin”)

This thing (The Event-Viewer) is hours of fun, for the whole family.
AND; – Here is a link to the Technet-Article – “Managing Event Logs from the Command Line
