Nokia 2730 Classic

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

YouTuber -  MobileGazette |  May 18, 2009  |  2:47 – The Nokia 2730 Classic is Nokia’s cheapest 3G phone ever. Surprisingly, it seems to be rather appealing and offers excellent value for money.

SMART PHONES -?- (My Definition = THIS; – Phones that connect and allow “Browsing” of Internet websites)

The “N98″ – is $49 Cap – (Translates to ~ Total min cost over 24 months is $1176 – [A Max-return to the supplier -/- Manufacturer "PLAN"]) – I am not cynical, .. just pointing out the “minimum-owership-cost” – (Without acually making ANY calls, or ANY Internet data-downloads -/- web-browsing) – which you can add-too the “Cost-Of-MAKING-CALLs”

QUESTION: – Will the ovi – gps maps work on this phone? -(Nokia 2730 Classic)- Answer = _ ?
How much are they?
Can I still get one in July 2010?

Social media and sentiment mining

Businesses and advertisers can already access enormous amounts of personal data on social media sites, from where you live to what you like. The next step is sentiment analysis, where online conversations are mined for words and thoughts, for a commercial advantage. Is this ethical, and could computers really sift sarcasm from enthusiasm? Theme broken -?- (not any more)

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

There is number of things that display differently since changing to wordpress theme Piano-Black (version 2.2) – Ad_Blah – pasted below in block quote(s).

Piano Black 2.2 by mono-lab

This theme supports widget, threaded-comments, theme-options,and translation is ready. Also including page-navigation and multi level dropdown menu. You can see live demo including more information here http://www.mono-lab.net/demo3/

After having it installed for the last ten days or so, … I can review it as an interesting theme, but will might return to the Kubrick theme simply due to familiarity with that, and time-constraints not allowing endless (re-configuration of a theme) activity.

The blog theme is going to look very rough for a few days, and navigation will be minimal.
Confirmed-Broken – the wordpress control panel tell me a *.css style-sheet is missing.
Confirmed-Broken – opened site with alternative browser (ff 3.6.3) and formating still broken.

UPDATED-POST; – Monday 28 June 2010 – (This seems very relevant after in context of this post – RE: – stuffing around with some stuff that went awfully wrong – and got it back to functional – still not 100% xhtml – but it is working) –

PROBLEM – continues to exist with new theme (Twenty Ten 1.0) -
The Archive-widget returned briefly (then disappeared), and the TAG-cloud is displaying IF you scroll to the bottom of the page. (big sigh)

UPDATED – 3:15pm – Found the problem in post – “Adobe plugin installed – (Browser – Iceweasel in Knoppix 6.2)” – where I have made a number of formatting changes both manually in the HTML and Via the wordpress-GUI, … and so causing the Theme to Break, and display erratically, (All fixed now)

Preserve changes or Revert on Shutdown

Preserve changes or Revert on Shutdown

Defining what “persistent mode” is, (As applied to vmware appliance browser)

This (topic) can be very misleading (Like a lot of stuff from the programming world) – everything seems to be upside-down, and back-the-front, –

Here goes my version – taken from the “vmware Browser appliance” – Getting-Started)

REFERENCE; – [vmware - Getting Started Guide - Ubuntu (version = Breezy Badger 5.10) - Browser Appliance]
Setting the Browser Appliance to Preserve Changes or Revert on Shutdown.
You can configure the Browser Appliance to preserve changes (persistent mode) or revert to its original state on shutdown (autorevert mode) by editing the Browser Appliance configuration (*.vmx) file.

1. In a text editor, go to the folder containing your Browser Appliance files, and open the Browser Appliance configuation file: Browser-Appliance.vmx
2. To have the Browser Appliance revert on shutdown, add the following lines to the configuration file:

scsi0:0.mode – “independent-nonpersistent”
snapshot.action – “autoRevert”
snapshot.disabled – “TRUE”

If the configuration file does not contain these lines, the Browser Appliance preserves changes on shutdown. After you have set the configuration file, follow the instructions in the following sections to close the Browser Appliance.

NOTE; – Setting suspended virtual machine to revert on shutdown is not recommended.

Adobe plugin installed – (Browser – Iceweasel in Knoppix 6.2)

CHANGED WRITE PERMISSION(s) –

SENARIO = THIS; – Needed permissions to “Write-Files” into the plugins directory.

This browser (Iceweasel), ..  is some derivative from the Firefox stable. And it is the default browser with this distro.

The default behaviour, where it reverts to its original-state after shut-down -/- reboot, .. deletes any files left on the desktop, and removes all browser shortcuts and history.

I had previously confirmed the correct file -/- plugin required to make youtube-videos play, .. using the Linux Firefox ver 3.6.3. Once this file (libflashplayer.so) was copied into the plugins directory, and restarted the browser, .. youtube-videos play. This browser was installed onto a separate harddisk mounted in the docking-station, .. and so now, always available.

BELOW – The sequence of commands used – (after; su – ) to allow me to write ‘a file’ into the plugins directory (NON persistent version of Knoppix on usb-stick)

Finally got it to work! – ADDED – (permissions) ugo+w to the target directory. Actual command typed out below -

chmod o+w /usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins
chmod g+w /usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins
chmod u+w /usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins

There might be a short-cut to do “All-three” of these in one-go.
AFTER completing the adding of permissions in this manner, …
I was able to copy and paste the iceweasel-plugin required into this directory. (libflashplayer.so) – All that is required to make the youtube videos play.

While some of the webpages are still in the History of this browser, (I will list them quickly below)

#1: – http://www.elated.com/articles/understanding-permissions/
#2: – http://catcode.com/teachmod/index.html

UPDATE: – (Repeating this process will reinforce what has been learnt) – the screen-dump below shows only the command used to complete the “permission-changes” required to allow writing to the plugins directory.

chmod

Some other notes taken from youtube video on basic permissions (pasted below)

The GUI – Hide(s) the permission(‘s)
Most graphical tools hide the detail.

ls -l
ls -ld

Displays the permissions of the directory

ls -l .

Lists the content of the directory
. dot means the current directory.

#3: – Others,

OTHER NOTES
The tutorials focus on setting permissions on “a-File” – where-as I am wanting to set permissions on the actual directory.

I will have to repeat this process -(every reboot) – for this usb-distro Knoppix 6.2 ~

HENCE; – Need to learn about the next topic called >>> Preserve changes or Revert on Shutdown <<< – which, … requires some definition of exactly what this means. (New post required here, – as this is getting right-off the original ‘post-topic’) – (A link will be added soon for topic “Preserve Changes or Revert on Shutdown”)

Scientific Vs Engineering
The scientific approach to solving problems say, “We need to understand and research MORE!”
The engineering approach to solving problems say, “Use what we know and understand NOW!”

THE INTERNET
The Internet was designed for unforeseen use. It was not designed to be perfect at what-ever its use was, .. at the time it was created. There was a choice NOT to apply perfect control. (Unlike Telecommunications systems with $$$-billing-$$$ as its core centralised feature)
