Sunday, August 30th, 2009Windows XP Remote Desktop Connection software
Instructions – Getting Started from the Micro$oft website
Download the Client Software HERE!
Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) for older systems, Windows 95, Windows 98 and 98 Second Edition, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0, or Windows 2000. (This is the same version of the client software as in Windows XP Service Pack 1.) When run, this software allows older Windows platforms to remotely connect to a computer running Windows XP Professional with Remote Desktop enabled.
OTHER NOTES:
Here is an interesting looking alternative, and the paragraph introduction is pasted below, (I might follow this up later on).
Overview
rdesktop is an open source client for Windows Terminal Services, capable of natively speaking Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) in order to present the user’s Windows desktop.
Supported servers include Windows 2000 Server, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows NT Server 4.0. rdesktop currently runs on most UNIX based platforms with the X Window System, and other ports should be fairly straightforward.
Netbooks
Saturday, August 29th, 2009CNET Article By Erica Ogg – Republished at cnn
In theory, the value of a Netbook — with its small keyboard, small screen, and lack of an optical drive — vs. an ultralight laptop with a long battery life and a full-size keyboard for roughly the same price was very low.
But now that we’re actually seeing how PC makers are packaging and selling CULV notebooks (take Dell’s recent introduction of its Inspiron 11z notebook) it’s obvious: Netbooks are nothing more than smaller, cheaper notebooks.
The distinction made some sense early on. The first Netbooks were very small, around 7 or 8 inches, and were used for little more than getting online.
Time to drop the Netbook label
- Story Highlights
- Writer says there’s no longer a difference between a Netbook and a notebook
- Netbooks now have more features and larger-size screens
- Netbooks didn’t take off until Windows XP was offered specifically for them
- You get more for your money with thin and light CULV-based Netbooks, writer says
Linux Distro – Linpus
Friday, August 28th, 2009WIKIPEDIA-INFO: >>> Linpus Linux is a Fedora based operating system created by the Taiwanese firm Linpus Technologies Inc.[1] Linpus was designed specifically to fully support the Asian market, with full Unicode support for the Chinese and Japanese languages. A special version, Linpus Lite, was written to run on devices with lower-cost hardware such as netbooks. It has both an icon and tab-based “Simple mode”, designed for new users; and, a conventional style “PC mode” for those wanting a more Microsoft Windows-like interface. It is targeted at handheld devices with smaller screens, and supports resolutions as low as VGA (640×480).[2] <<<
http://www.linpus.com/ | Download – Limpus-Lite = 700 MB
HERE IS WHAT I WANTED: (Linpus QuickOS – sometimes Loaded the S10e, maybe always, I have not bought one yet) The marketing blurb is pasted below – with a link to the download url for this distro.
With Linpus QuickOS you don’t have to wait for Windows to start enjoying your online life. Linpus QuickOS isn’t designed to replace your Windows, but give you more choice to access key applications quickly. It combines breakthrough technology, hardware cooperation, and Linpus’ open source expertise and experience to create the most complete product in this space.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: (Features might be BETTER description for this)
* Linux operating system targeted at low cost computer market;
* Icon interface
* low power hardware requirements
As described on the ‘Linpus QuickOS’ site.
ANOTHER-NOTE; It seems that Linpus Lite, AND Linpux QuickOS, are ‘one-&-the-same’ distro. (The usual marketing spin - designed to sell stuff, adding to the busy clang of technology hype
, .. so much fun)
THE ACTUAL FEATURE LIST IS EXTENSIVE: Here is the url
There are also Desktop and Media Centre versions of this OS;
* LINPUS – Linux Desktop = 3.6 GB Download
* LINPUS – Linux Media Centre = 4.5 GB Download
S10e feature; – zero value theft proposition
Thursday, August 27th, 2009Price Search the ‘S10e’ at http://www.lenovo.com/au/en/index.html [Thursday 27th August 2009][AU$599 - With 160GB Harddrive] – And it also include the 6 Cell Lithium-Ion.
In Googling around this product, I have found a number of cheaper products with smaller 80GB harddisk, half the RAM at 512MB, US-Supplier $349
Two examples of the innovative technologies introduced by Lenovo with the IdeaPad S10e include advanced network security and remote manageability tools. Advanced network security tools prevent users from accessing unauthorised internet content and control access to NSW DET networks. Remote manageability tools allow NSW DET to remotely monitor and manage the devices on demand, wherever they are located, maximizing their efficiency and effectiveness.
The Lenovo IdeaPad S10e features ground breaking theft protection features such as hardware level reporting, retrieval and remote disabling functions and RFID tagging. The Lenovo IdeaPad S10e presents a zero value theft proposition thereby removing any incentive for them to be stolen and protecting the students and teachers that use them.
In-built connectivity options such as wireless LAN and WAN, bluetooth and ethernet enable the Lenovo IdeaPad S10e to be used in a variety of settings – the classroom, the library, the playground, in the home, on the bus – anywhere students study, collaborate and learn.
AND-THIS; (What the S10e can actually do)
the S10e offers Internet connectivity features to enable students to do online research, sharing and collaboration tools, and email, social networking and other web applications. It also features basic functionality for word processing and light multimedia presentation functionality.
What are Permalinks?
Wednesday, August 26th, 2009THIS COULD BE USEFUL:
Permalinks are the permanent URLs to your individual weblog posts, as well as categories and other lists of weblog postings. A permalink is what another weblogger will use to link to your article (or section), or how you might send a link to your story in an e-mail message. The URL to each post should be permanent, and never change — hence permalink.
THIS – URL: askapache has some sage advice in – ‘Please Backup your entire MySql Database before you ever mess with Permalinks or rewrites.’
I can hear a little voice saying ‘I dont know how to backup MySql Database’, .. Backup wordpress-blog (ver 2.8.4) using the, .. Tools | Export | Backup – Download all the text of your blog into a *.xml file format. Your images, and multimedia will have to be backed up manually. The *.xml format preserves the complete structure of you blog.
There might be a complete solution out there, that will backup EVERY-THING in your blog, (Please place a link here) if you know of a better solution. Thx
Access Denied
Wednesday, August 26th, 2009The practice and policy of global Internet filtering;
Access Denied tells us unmistakably that the Internet is one of the most important – and most contested – terrains of global politics.
It is being fought over by states, civil society organisations, and corporations. The essays in this volume do a superb job of educating us about the new battlefield of global politics.

Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI)
Tuesday, August 25th, 2009Found this URL – By Eric A. Hall – (And just wanted to place a link to his site) Hence I have pasted a small snipet from there as an intro to WMI (Microsoft Windows Management Console)
Instead, administrators who have committed themselves to Linux-based management consoles have had to rely on gateway or proxy technologies that query Windows systems for the desired data on behalf of the management station. For Windows-heavy networks, the path of least resistance has simply been to use Windows-based management platforms that can access the data directly,
Deleting Tags
Tuesday, August 25th, 2009To many tags have been added, – and now, (With the Tag-Cloud – plugin/widget) installed, there are NEWER tags that are NOT being displayed.
Maybe less IS more.
Testing wp-cumulus
Sunday, August 23rd, 2009Ok, now, .. figure out HOW to adjust the settings of wp-cumulus
Ok, that is not to hard, just enter the <width=”300″> into the insertion point and that will override the default. (NICE!) , .. Would be nice if it worked for me!
PROBLEM: How should I put this? The wp-cumulus works, but the ‘adjustement-aspect’ is not working for me. So might have to try one of the other ways of installing this tag-cloud. (soon, .. it can stay for now!)
OTHER LIMITATIONS: (Built into the _wp-TagCloud)
The tag-cloud has a limit on the number of ‘tags’ that can be displayed, (even if I continue to ADD-MORE-TAGs) they simply will not be displayed. I will have to visit some wordpress documentation sites to findout more >>>
