Unit ICA13101B – Install and manage network protocols
SAG – Says: You should be able to:
- Install and manage network protocols
- Identify network protocol applications
SOME NOTES:
Briefly describe the OSI model – AND; Found this little gem by David Chappell, and here is a good article named, ‘Why the Seven-Layer Model Must Die’ >>> [QUOTE] <<< The model is wrong for today. It was created in the late 1970s as part of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) effort. Think how different networking was then: wide-area networks were the main story, not LANs, and connecting mainframes to dumb terminals was still important. Why would anyone expect that an architecture invented for this world would still be relevant today?
SOME MORE NOTES:
Topic; Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS), is not something I have needed to use in my test lab, nor do I expect to see this in any home / consumer environment (Where I currently work / slave / dwell, in a consultant role) and so it was interesting to get a new perspective on what this protocol might be able to do. Primarily, I am only interested in the overview/description here, (AND; Here it is keyed in below)
[VERBATIM] Windows Internet Naming Service (WINS) enables the resolution of computer names to IP addresses. When an operating system is first installed on a computer one of the tasks is to configure the computer with a unique name known as the NetBIOS name. (Some more stuff here)
WINS maintains a database on the server that accepts request from Windows or DOS clients to register with a particular NetBIOS name. The server keeps track of which NetBIOS names are linked to which IP addresses. Because WINS manages the mappings between IP addresses and NetBIOS names, clients do not have to broadcast their NetBIOS names to the rest of the network. The elimination of this broadcast traffic improves network performance.
The WINS server service is installed on a server computer; however, both a Windows server computer and a workstation can use the WINS server to resolve network names. [END - VERBATIM]
OK – PROBLEM; (WordPress and me?) The interface for the FONT – SIZE is NOT user friendly enough for me to correct the formatting the way I would like, with emphasis on QUICKLY! If I view it via the HTML, I have noticed that wp is providing the ‘Structural’ html components, Verses ‘CSS-Formatting’ components, which in turn will help with my understanding of web-development, but THAT is another lesson for another day. Must do other things with the remainer of today, .. and remain FOCUSED on the plan. [12:47pm Friday 31 July 2009]
