OBJECTIVE
tell customers how to set their homepage to http:// -{blah}- .com.
go to Tools | Internet options | and click use current (while on that page, make sure there is only one-tabbed page open. If you have multiple tabbed pages open, AND select the “use-current” option, is will list all the tabbed pages currently open)
but i would REALLY like to be able to tell them to press ctrl D or something to that effect for simplicity.
Some websites provide “a tool” – (to make this process easy) – Ie, Make Y!7 My Homepage
RE-Installed the os (Windows 7 Enterprise edition) – So need to RE-Install browser plugins required – already got the Flash-Player installed. – Now the http://www.savetube.com/ (Which is a great service) – requires a “newer-version” of java, (than the one installed, … out of the box)
Hmmm – Firefox version 3.01 – complaining that Java Runtime Environment PLUGIN is required to “Check-the-Version-Number” – OK! – (Ill do that!) – [Maybe not]
I have installed this file – “jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe” – 15.2 MBs -(Downloaded on a previous encounter LIKE this one)- and need to restart the browser maybe, .. here is a little picture >>>
You are using the Browser uploader. Try the Flash uploader instead. (wtf?) -
all I wanted to do was, … put a link to this litttle website – (One thing leads to another) – http://www.javatester.org/version.html Now restart the browser.
YEY – (It works) -
Version 1.6.0_07 – (could be updated to version 16 or even 20) – might have to do that IF savetube.com refuses to work.
RESULT: – Java-Ver 1.6.0_07 Works for downloading videos from the savetube.com website.
_wp-behaviour: – (Image uploader) The “description-field-box” is a complete waste of time for me – . Some meta-data thingy, that I do NOT have any use for, … (yet).
SENARIO = THIS; – Needed permissions to “Write-Files” into the plugins directory.
This browser (Iceweasel), .. is some derivative from the Firefox stable. And it is the default browser with this distro.
The default behaviour, where it reverts to its original-state after shut-down -/- reboot, .. deletes any files left on the desktop, and removes all browser shortcuts and history.
I had previously confirmed the correct file -/- plugin required to make youtube-videos play, .. using the Linux Firefox ver 3.6.3. Once this file (libflashplayer.so) was copied into the plugins directory, and restarted the browser, .. youtube-videos play. This browser was installed onto a separate harddisk mounted in the docking-station, .. and so now, always available.
BELOW – The sequence of commands used – (after; su – ) to allow me to write ‘a file’ into the plugins directory (NON persistent version of Knoppix on usb-stick)
Finally got it to work! – ADDED – (permissions) ugo+w to the target directory. Actual command typed out below -
There might be a short-cut to do “All-three” of these in one-go.
AFTER completing the adding of permissions in this manner, …
I was able to copy and paste the iceweasel-plugin required into this directory. (libflashplayer.so) – All that is required to make the youtube videos play.
While some of the webpages are still in the History of this browser, (I will list them quickly below)
UPDATE: – (Repeating this process will reinforce what has been learnt) – the screen-dump below shows only the command used to complete the “permission-changes” required to allow writing to the plugins directory.
chmod
Some other notes taken from youtube video on basic permissions (pasted below)
The GUI – Hide(s) the permission(‘s)
Most graphical tools hide the detail.
ls -l
ls -ld
Displays the permissions of the directory
ls -l .
Lists the content of the directory
. dot means the current directory.

OTHER NOTES
The tutorials focus on setting permissions on “a-File” – where-as I am wanting to set permissions on the actual directory.
I will have to repeat this process -(every reboot) – for this usb-distro Knoppix 6.2 ~
HENCE; – Need to learn about the next topic called >>> Preserve changes or Revert on Shutdown <<< – which, … requires some definition of exactly what this means. (New post required here, – as this is getting right-off the original ‘post-topic’) – (A link will be added soon for topic “Preserve Changes or Revert on Shutdown”)
IN-CONTEXT; – (Firefox ver 3.6.3 – app-crash – HERE -&- HERE) – (Faulting Application Identified – BUT – in the end, was a WRONG diagnosis) – It turns out that this “app-crash”, has become a “known-problem” for firefox-browser ver 3.6.3! (Windows vista-biz on my hardware) – Cant say I want to return to vista – (Using usb installaton of Knoppix 6.2 today)
Firefox 3.6.4 provides uninterrupted browsing for Windows and Linux users when there is a crash in the Adobe Flash, Apple Quicktime or Microsoft Silverlight plugins.
If a plugin crashes or freezes, it will not affect the rest of Firefox. You will be able to reload the page to restart the plugin and try again.
Firefox 3.6.4 also fixes the following issues found in previous versions of Firefox 3.6:
Mozilla girds Firefox with ‘hang detector’
The next version of Firefox will include a “hang detector” that automatically terminates plug-ins that quit talking to the outside world. Set to arrive next week – after a bit of a delay – Firefox 3.6.4 is designed to minimize crashes by running Flash, Silverlight, Java, and other plug-ins as processes separate from the core …
This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator.
Removed Chrome -and- Outlook now says this!
Unable to REVERSE the sequence of operations, .. -AND- Tried “System-Restore” – (Using the Adminstrator acccount) – which failed on TWO occasions. -Vista-Biz, is very, … (How should I put this)- non-functional, possibly due to ME trying make it perform (a little better) -
This operating system simply gets in the way of “normal” computer activities.
A SOLUTION -???- (website slipstick.com seem to have a nice simple / quick explaination and how to fix solution) here on this link >>> http://www.slipstick.com/problems/link_restrict.htm <<< so will give these options a try. BEFORE trying some of the Micro$oft options, .. which are hinting at “importing a registry hive” from another machine, .. (That sound like fun!)
POST-TITLE; – “The Error is Vista” – (Should never have bought a machine with this OS, .. dont like upgrades and buying the full Windows 7 at around $300 (+ or – $50) is un-acceptable, ..
OTHER M$ bugs = Office 2007 (And the new “Ribbon-Feature?”) – lets put it this way, … IF I have to spend time (Hours?) learning a new office tool-set, namely the “Ribbon” which microsoft in their wisdom have persisted in placing “like-feature(s)” in separate areas???, … I would rather put the hours into learning Open-Office 3.2, and see what alternative software(s) have to offer, as Vista -/- Office 2007, … required me to invest heavily in MORE “re-skilling”.
THE TRAINING; – Is the most expensive part of owning a computer system, and the “Micro$oft-Vista-way”, .. simply does NOT work (consistently), … combined with Lenovo crap-ware, the problem is multiplied. Now , …
A DECISION; – Re-devlelop, the old skills sets (formatting documents) with open office. Prepare to use alternative OS. Easy to say, … hard to do.
IF new (To this blog) and my situation -/- “The on-going problem” ~ follow >>> [Tag-Links: "App crash", "eventvwr.exe", "Firefox hangs", "Vista", "Web-Browsers"] <<< at the bottom of this post.
BROWSER? – CHROME; – The Google web-browser hangs!
CHECKING THE EVENTvwr.exe – (Which tells me lots of technical stuff – the solution might be in the interpretation, but I have lost patience (And time will no longer allow me to pursue troubleshooting in this manner))
FILE-NAME; – 2 user registry handles leaked (BECOMEs – “Chrome_2UserRegistryHandlesLeaked.txt”)
LOGGED; – 8/06/2010 12:01:42 PM
THE PROBLEM: –
This browser has “Hung” a number times today – (AND; strangely started working again without REBOOTING the system)
I have rebooted the system on ONE occasion, as I needed “A fully-Functional-system” – (Some admin-chore)
I am very patient (AND; curious) about system errors and trouble shooting / fixing / finding a SOLUTION.
HOWEVER; – (As documented PREVIOUSLY) – This sort of thing is just beyond my limit and current resource to pursue, (Which in turn means I am NOT doing the stuff that I should be doing) – GRRRRRR -
BELOW; – (Is one of the error messages in eventvwr.exe – The “Custom Views | Administrative Events”)
Windows detected your registry file is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded now. The applications or services that hold your registry file may not function properly afterwards.

THIS-POST; – (Related to App crash? – I think so)
So that people are NOT being MIS-Informed, about the true circumstance of this “Computer-Status”, .. (r61 IBM Laptop) ~ (Running -Vista-Biz, with a GAZillion-IBM addons, and combined with the EXTRA Vista-SERVICES, the machine is / “WAS” slugish.
IT is useable, and I can get my work done, with the current “Setup”, …
My configuration – Is certainly NOT “As it came” – (Out of the box) from the IBM shop.
AND; IF, I re-install the Vista-Biz DEFAULTs, .. I get the “AWFUL” original-configuration back.
SO; I need to know, what I did, .. to get it into a reasonable “operational-state”.
UDATED – July 13, Vista-Biz (Removed for now) – using Windows 7 Enterprise (Trial-Ver) – Most issuse(s) and problems attached to the Vista-Biz senario, … are gone.
Faulting Application Identified – (Via Event Viewer) – Causes the Chrome web-browser to crash (As-well as the firefox browser), .. Now I have an alternative to continue with, .. (the FF-browser)
The app-crash prevents me from Killing the Brower-Process running, .. (Only a RESTART of the computer, .. can fix that)
THE PROBLEM: – That exists on this computer, (Will cause ANY web-browser to crash, .. it would seem), .. HENCE the problem is not IN the browser, but some other plugin-/-application, that is hooked into the browser (What ever brower is used)
UNINSTALL Acrobat Reader Ver 8 – (To be completed tonight, ..)
THEN – Wait and observe, … >>> IF the application-crash, “Disappears” – NEVER to happen again hopefully <<< (Even if it is only once -OR- twice a day, .. it is a real PAIN)
