2. The Fundamental Truths

you can’t increase the speed of light.

(2a) (corollary). No matter how hard you try, you can’t make a
baby in much less than 9 months. Trying to speed this up
*might* make it slower, but it won’t make it happen any
quicker.

(3) With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine. However, this is
not necessarily a good idea. It is hard to be sure where they
are going to land, and it could be dangerous sitting under them
as they fly overhead.

(4) Some things in life can never be fully appreciated nor
understood unless experienced firsthand. Some things in
networking can never be fully understood by someone who neither
builds commercial networking equipment nor runs an operational
network.

Networking (Connecting Linux-boxes to Micro$oft-boxes)

SOME KNOWLEDGE -/- HISTORY – (Is required)
#3: – With all things being what they were, Microsoft kept their implementation of NBT (mostly) secret. If you didn’t have a Windows machine, you were out of luck sharing files or printers with other Windows machines. Thus, the need for Samba — a way to mix Windows and Linux machines together without requiring a separate Windows server — was born.

#4: – What Exactly is Samba?
Samba is essentially a TCP/IP file and print server for Microsoft Windows clients. In fact, it can support any SMB/CIFS-enabled client. One of Samba’s big strengths is that you can use it to blend your mix of Windows and Linux machines together without requiring a separate Windows server. Samba includes support for Active Directory, unicode, new authentication and filename mangling systems, printing support, trust relationships, LDAP integration and loadable RPC modules.

I just want to connect Linux-boxes to Micro$oft-boxes, – (But that will require LOTs of effort) – hmmm – so I have produced this little post about what I have found so far, .. after approx 1 to 2 hours attempt(s) and failed configuration of this idea.

YEY – 9:15pm – Got Ubuntu 9.04 connected to Windows XP-Share – USED; The ubuntu menu ->>> Places | Connect to Server <<< – (AND; Input the appropriate configuration details, such as host-name, workgroup, share-name, account-ID -/- password) - happy now :)

MORE ? >>> 9:55pm – Can access the Window box from Ubuntu laptop, .. Getting XP to access ubuntu may require samba configuation, .. OR maybe terminal services might work with some minimal configuration.

We have a problem Huston! – Windows 7, will NOT connect to Server 2008 share

HERE; Is a – (Basic – setup / configure a LAN) – simple check-list that works with XP-Pro systems in a ‘work-group’

OTHER MISCELLANEOUS ITEMs; – Windows 7 is RC7100, and Server 2008 = Trial-Version – BUT that should NOT be having any bearing on this problem.

It is a strange problem, as the normal trouble shooting procedures have been completed, and firewall / configuration turned OFF, on both machines. It was working yesterday – BEFORE installing ZA, and installed a swag of Micro$oft updates – so once again, the problem can NOT be pin-pointed to one particular update / software install.

The Server-2008 – can access the laptop, and so I can work-around this issue, but it would be REALLY NICE, if I could resolve the problem. BUT it might be all for nothing, IF I have to RE-Install Windows-7 all over again – cause it IS going to expire on 1st  March 2010 (About 7 days from NOW)

GOOGLED: – “Error Code: 0×80070035” – This can be overly complicated by misinformation, but I believe that I have collected some RELEVANT facts / checks to perform when this problem arises.

Re: error code: 0×80070035 network path not found
Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you’ll have to configure it to allow access to “trusted zone” addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

PING each computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. You can obtain the IP address of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG. This should work for any Windows version. A failure here needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs: Workstation, DHCP Client, DNS Client, Server, TCP/IP Netbios helper, Computer Browser.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Neighborhood, make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login.

While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it’s possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it’s correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing.

Friday 12, 2010 – The group, Anonymous, blocked the main government website www.australia.gov.au and www.aph.gov.au, the Australian parliament’s homepage, for a second day running in protest over controversial plans to filter the internet.

Codenamed “Operation: Titstorm”, the hacking campaign involves hundreds of people from around the world and used a technique called Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) to jam web traffic, one of the protesters said.

The main-stream media (TV) – is not reporting on this much (Or, I have stopped watching), and so, ..  ANY good ‘Internet-Search’ reveals a wealth of information on these topics).  – I hope to follow up soon on this topic, from the technical angle, without the political-hype, lies, and deception provided by bias reporters, and hence provide my-own biased opinion.

TED – 4chan’s moot takes pro-anonymity to TED 2010

In the closing minutes, moot’s purpose for speaking became clear: he insisted that anonymity is a good thing, yet we’re all giving it up voluntarily. He wasn’t talking about the NSA or tech policy or anything like that. Rather, he said sites like 4chan may go the way of the dinosaur because people are choosing to join social networking sites and persistent identity services. One of the ‘Net’s greatest strengths is disappearing as a result, but moot claimed that sites like 4chan show that a lot of good can come of anonymity, too. He seemed puzzled as to why everyone wants their identity tied to so much of what they say and do online. Do people hold back? Do they censor themselves? The power of being able to say or post whatever you want is undeniably strong, but moot didn’t speak to the dangers of anonymity.

Why do people keep saying it’s a child porn filter?? Conroy wants to censor sites like youtube for goodness sakes. it’s about banning anything and everything he doesn’t like not just child porn.

This just demonstrates how underprepared the government is to make sweeping changes to internet access. I predicted cyber attacks in response to the filter months ago, I can’t believe the government are so naive, and to now see them flailing around helpless against simple DDOS attacks is pathetic. This internet filter issue is waking a sleeping giant, DDOS is surely just the tip of the iceberg. The underground community have more resources and are more organised than what people give them credit for. How can they seriously complain about these attacks not being a legitimate form of political protest, when they are pushing this filter ahead without any public consultation in the first place? What goes around comes around.
